Inject fun and tons of practice into your R articulation therapy with these printable R card decks. What sets this R card deck apart from others? They are organized into 10 separate decks for each of 10 different initial R contexts—this allows students who can only say R in one context, such as “ruh” to practice that motor movement with precise articulation many times, because there are 15 “ruh” words.

Each word has been carefully selected for students to experience maximum success. There are no other R’s in the words, so all their attention can be focused on the single pre-vocalic R. For example, once a student can say “run” successfully, it’s not a far stretch to say “rug,” and then “rub.” With this approach, students’ accuracy grows exponentially!

Teaching Ideas

• Print two sets of cards and use them to play memory and matching games.
• Work at the word or sentence level, or both. One way to target words and sentences when playing memory is to say the single words 3-5 times as you turn over cards, but whenever you get a match you create a sentence.
• Ramp up the difficulty by including ALL the words in the matches you won in a multi sentence story.

All you need to do is print and laminate the cards and then you have an engaging grab and go activity you can use for all time. Mix and match different R contexts as students’ abilities grow. Don’t be surprised if you start to hear Rs you haven’t taught begin to emerge— even vocalic R.
