Description
If your students are baffled by rhyming, try introducing word position knowledge first. Nursery rhymes are a time honored way to teach children how to anticipate and fill in rhyming words. Before a child can recognize and recall the last sound in a word, they need to be able to recognize and remember the last word in a sentence. The Nursery rhyme coloring book can help you do exactly that. Perfect for preschool and kindergarten, and for older, struggling students.
Nursery Rhymes present an ideal way to build the foundation for both spoken language and reading. In order to succeed in phonemic awareness, children need to recognize the separability of individual phonemes. Before they can recognize separate phonemes they need to recognize 1) the separability of words and 2) the position of words in sentences.* Coloring pages are included for fun and to send home for additional practice.
Here’s What You’ll Get
10 Black & White line drawings of nursery rhymes and their text
How to Use
- Say the rhyme together a few times
- Say the first line and ask them to repeat the last word they heard. This can take several tries before they grasp the concept of the last word.
- Say the first line and pause before you say the last word, so the can fill it in.
- When they can easily supply the last word in the first line, repeat the steps with the second line.
- Call attention to how both last words rhyme. Adapt as needed for nursery rhymes that rhyme on every other line, or have other patterns.
- Use counters to mark each word in a line. Teach them 1:1 word/counter correspondence.
- Lay down carpet spots and teach them to step on one circle for each word.
- Transition to reading rhyming books and identifying the last word in each line, and then identifying rhyming words in multiple lines.
- Color anytime in the process and have fun!
Knowledge of word position, and recall of the specific words in that position, is a game changer for students who struggle with rhyming and basic phonological awareness. The second game changer is understanding that each word is separate. Teach both with this Nursery Rhyme Coloring Book!
